Help Unlocking Phone with Damaged Screen

Hi All,
A friend of mine has this phone and the screen is completely broken and 100% dark, although when you touch it you can feel the vibration that it is working. Trouble is it is locked with a swipe passcode, and he is unable to unlock it to sync it to his computer to get important photos off. He has a MacBook Pro and the charging cable, he is not looking to buy any cables, and he is not very tech-savy. Is there any possible way to unlock it so he can sync the photos onto his Mac? IF, the phone already had "My Phone Explorer" on it, he would have been able to get some basic stuff off the phone.
Contacts and SMS stuff.

Are the photos he wants worth the price of replacing the screen? for most phones that can be done at about $200.
If he will just have the screen replaced, he gets the photos and the phone back in working order.
