unmount usb device

I have a via netbook with IC Sandwich installed. I am new to android and am just learning my way around the interface. I can load and play a pc hard drive via usb as well as flash drives for copying files easy enough. I do not see an option anywhere, either on the device or in my file manager to properly unmount them when I am finished. Talking with people, I'm told to just remove it but when I do that I get a message warning me to properly unmount the device. What is the proper way to unmount usb devices with android 4.0? I have been using linux on my pc's for years so I am familiar with the file structure but so far this has proven to be elusive.

Mark this as solved. The recommended method to unmount usb devices is to hibernate the device, remove it, and then wake it up again.
