Help unread SMS indications won't clear on google messenger

For the past week or so, any time I receive and read a new SMS, the unread indicator isn't cleared by the act of reading. More specifically:
1 - The badge showing unread indicator on Nova Prime / Tesla remains at 1 (should disappear)
2 - Tasker continues to think I have a new SMS message and remind me about it.

I have found as a "workaround" that I can clear the unread indications by deleting the thread containing the most recent message.

Has anyone else seen this?
I think google messenger was updated recently

btw I have a Rooted Nexus 6 running Android 6.0.1, updated through the the October 2016 security patch

No response....hmmm. Let me ask a different way:

Does anyone else use Google messenger along with unread sms count badge on your launcher?

If so, is your unread count working correctly?
