Unrecognized phone

I plugged the Canvas into the computer but it didn't show on the screen. It did make that sound, though. Does this have something to do with no sim card? Short of adding one, what can I do to make the PC recognize it?

Thanks, I did change it from charge only but it still doesn't show the SD card. One way it pretends it's a camera and another shows regular Android items. There's even a MIDI option, which I assume is Musical Instrument Digital Interface, but I don't know why that'd be there, maybe for mp3s? I have downloaded a couple. By the way, it's a Coolpad, though Micromax does seem to be considerably more common.

So what are "regular android items" if not the storage (and by "sd card" do you mean the real sd card, or the virtual volume /sdcard, which is the internal storage pretending to be a card)?

Regular Android items would be files such as maybe photos and music, possibly system. When I plugged in the ZTE it apparently showed the real SD card, because that's the only place where photos and videos are stored in it, and it began transferring automatically or at least searching for them unless I told it charge only.

I I see why you are confused ... windows was looking for photos and music on the ZTE so you got the media transfer wizard. It may not launch the media import wizard with the Canvas (for whatever reason). I'll bet you did have access to the real SD card, but it would be in a folder that looked like /externalsd or it might be nested in the /sdcard folder.

Does your phone have the option to format the SD Card as Adoptable Storage or Portable? Option is available in most phones running 6.0 and above. Unless formatted as Portable, I don't think the PC will be able to see it.

Yes, it has both options. I want to make it portable because it's more useful. Are these folders of which lunatic59 speaks on the PC or phone, or maybe both?

How do I find the phone folders? Would I use file manager? What would I do with them if I found them? Repeat for the PC wizard situation.
