unrooting galaxy mini

Hi, I rooted my galaxy mini for one reason only, (did not know the benefits of rooting) I wanted to lift the network lock. I live in Ireland, my provider is Meteor, they want mad money from me to switch providers.
I have learned a lot about how rooting works from some really nice people on here. I did not want to keep bugging them with my endless questions so I taught it would be a better idea to start this thread asking the following questions.

1. can rooting remove the network lock.?

2.can my phone support apps normally not allowed.?

3.what are the main benefits of rooting.?

4.if all else fails is it safe to unroot my phone.?

I apologize if I failed to find answers in the forums which i did find very helpful.

1. no, rooting does not equal sim unlock.

2. yes, there's plenty of apps that require root access.

3. you have full access to your phones internal memory (which is needed to unlock phones network) so you can delete a lot of apps that were pre-loaded in your phone, but you don't need them.

4. if you do everything properly, nothing wrong can happen. I rooted mine by installing custom rom cyanogenmod 10.1 (based on newest android 4.2) but you can root it without installing custom rom, just google around about it
