Unwanted intrusions from google app - Google

For no apparent reason my google app opens up a screen with the ^listening now^ message. I don't think I
am activating voice by saying ^ok google^. I alternate between screaming obscenities at my phone, and enjoying the non voice part of the app. I have deactivted voice, and I have gone so far as disabling the app. Any help in keeping the app but not having it act as the world's most annoying pop-up would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Are you by chance holding the Home button down?

What device do you have? It would also be helpful if you could share a screenshot of the pop-up so we can be sure we're thinking about the same thing.
