update flashed phone

Okayy so I have a samsung galaxy s3 that I recently flashed to metro pcs and lately ive been receiving a message saying there is a new updat for the phone if I happen to update the phone would it have any affect on the flahing? Or can I put a custom rom with the update on that way it doesnt mess up the mms?
