Help Update for a Noob

Ok, so i have searched but this topic is still not settled yet. There's a security update going around and I wanted to know whats up with it. To date it seems like it's mainly for the G1 but what about the Magic, do we need one too?

And if that's the case where would I get it manually because here in Canada i'm on the Fido network and it's a Rogers phone so I doubt i'll be getting the update OTA.
