After any firmware update you need to do a wipe data/factory reset.

Make sure you can get into recovery mode. Power phone off. wait untill phone has completely powered off.

Press and hold the follwing:
Volume Up + Home key + Power key.
When phone gets to the samsung boot screen release the power button only.
When phone get to a screen with a lot of coloured text, release the other 2 keys.
Look for wipe data/factory reset at the top in blue.
Use the Volume up/down keys to navigate to it.
Press the home key to ok the action.
On the next screen you will see a lot NO's, in the middle will be one YES.
Navigate to YES using volume up/down.
Press home key to ok the action.

Doing this clears out ant remnants of the old os.

Thanks stylelite! that cleared the problem - but all my apps and data are lost! :p

I have to root this first - it's not as easy as it was before using z4 root - but i gotta do it so I can restore my apps and data.

many thanks :)

Unfortunately this some times happens.
To root, I would suggest using CF-ROOT with clockworkmod-XX-XEU_JPY with BusyBox. Thsi will also give you 2e recovery mode, more options that the standard 3e recovery mode.
Install Rom Manager(there's a free version in the market) and Root Explorer(no free version of this. I think it costs about

thanks for the suggestion! :) however, I am not that good in terms of modding. with this suggestion you are giving, do I just install those two programs and I'm good to go? :)

Once rooted using CF-Root-clockworkmod with-busybox, this is one program.
You can then install Rom Manager and Root Explorer.

I'm not to sure why you say you need root to restore your apps ect, rooting doesn't help with that unless you are using something like Titanium backup.

Yes, I'm using Titanium back-up.

Sorry, I'm really a noob here.. Some basic questions:

How will I do "CF-Root-clockworkmod with-busybox?" Do I need to do this when i already rooted my phone using SUperOneClick?

Then after I install the Rom Manager and Root Explorer, what do i do? :)

If you've used superoneclick root then you can forget CF-Root_clockworkmode, I only suggested it because it's what I use and superoneclick didn't work on my 2.2.1 firmware.

Root explorer allows you to brows the file system of the the phone i.e files that you wouldn't normally be able to and a lot more, but if you are unsure I would leave well alone.

Rom Manager allows you to excess recovery mode from with in the app. You can also do a backup of your current firmware, I know all this works
with CF-Root, but not sure if it works with superoneclick.

Titanium will only work on rooted phones, it's great app but be careful, it allows you to uninstall stock apps which may be linked to other apps which then may not work.

What you should do is make sure you can get into recovery mode using the 3 buttons, if you don't know how to do this let me know.

oh I see. thanks for the information, and the word of caution. :)

Yes, I do know how to do the 3-button recovery mode (power + up volume + home buttons). This is where I wiped all my data.

I read in some threads that there are some Galaxy phones which do not have this. I do not want that to happen to me if ever, as I can do the wipe thing when I encounter problems. Is it possible that an update disables them? Or is that something that once you have it, you always have it?

Yes that's right, there are lot of Galaxy S, Vibrants and I think fascinates to that don't have the 3 button combo working.
There is a fix for it over at the XDA Developers site, but it is quite complex.

As far as I know updating the phones firmware doesn't disable it, so you should be ok.

Root also allows you to install unsigned update.zip files, but as I said be careful what you do especially in Titanium and root explorer.

There is one thing you should back up and that,s the efs folder and the best way to get to it is using root explorer, so start up root explorer and look for system, tap on system to open it, look for the efs folder, long press on it until a menu pops up and select move, you will see 2 new buttons at the bottom now, paste and cancel don't touch them yet.
Navigate back and look for your external sdcard, once in there you can tap on paste. done.

It's also a good idea to save a copy of this to your PC as this folder contains important information
