Help Updating firmware on DEFY

SiMON2g

Lurker
Hey guys, I own a Motorola Defy and it's an old piece of junk but i've been trying to update it without success. When i go to system updates, it says there are no updates available and that my phone is up to date. When i contacted motorola they told me that this phone was up to date to the current software, and that it's a retail great britain version as i bought it online.

I'm currently running firmare 2.1-update1 and just would like to update to any firmware that will allow me to access GooglePlay because at the moment i am stuck with Android Market, and thus cannot access any new apps that come out.

My model number is MB525 if that helps.

Thanks

I wouldn't call it junk! Mine is still going after three years!

Defy is limited to 2.2. It is an old phone, they'd much prefer you to buy another after that  . If you can't update to 2.2 the phone shop would probably do it for free, seeing as it's the last official update.

Saying that though, you can upgrade yourself. Search "root defy superoneclick", "install recovery moto defy", "custom rom defy" etc etc. You'll probably find the XDA developers site in those results, it's a lot for us to explain here. Read carefully so you don't brick it, but it's not that difficult.

I think you need to upgrade to 2.2 before attempting custom roms like Cyanogenmod 7. It's probably safer to upgrade in stages like that anyway as many of the kernels are based on what's gone before.

Don't forget to root before installing custom roms! But after that, all custom roms will be rooted ones so you won't need to root again. You can then install custom roms from recovery (see above).

I went from 2.1, 2.2 (unofficial release), Cyanogemod 7 (GB), Cyanogenmod 9 (ICS), now 4.1.1 (JB) - Codename Android, a collaboration between Cyanogenmod, Open Kang Project & Team EOS. It works really well.
