Help updating my Ellipsis Qmv7B

Okay I bought this tablet at a pawn shop and it has all the verizon screens but I do not have verizon service nor do i intend to get it. I only use the tablet around the house on wifi mostly for my 3 year old. So my question is can I "de-verizon" this thing? If I can and do, will it cause problems? Also I was trying to see if there was an update for the OS (which started this endeavor, it presently has jellybean 4.2.2.) and when I hit check for updates it keeps saying 'cannot connect to server" but it does have internet connection gets youtube, webpages, etc. So is this an error on the server end and who's servers does the update come from. Or could this possibly be because it's trying to get the from a verizon server and it wont connect because i dont have verizon? if so anyway to check for and install updates thru my puter and a usb?
Hope that's enough info (or too much LOL), thanks in advance!

I live on the wrong side of the Pond to have practical experience of Verizon, but if it has Verizon-branded software then for certain any updates (if any exist) will come from a Verizon server. And while, as I say, I don't know, I'd not be surprised to learn that it won't get the update without being registered with VZW - they do seem to be the most controlling of all of the US networks.

Your only hope would be to root it and go from there, but there doesn't seem to be much info or development available for this tablet. I did find this-

Proceed at your own risk. I'm assuming if you got it from a pawn shop that it was cheap so it won't be a tragedy if you brick it. In any case if you do there are plenty of other cheap tabs out there that you can get brand new, no need to head back to the pawn shop again.
