Updating using SD Card

I have HTC Magic from Rogers in Canada running version 1.5, since my provider does not support updates I am trying to 1.6 or 2.0 myself using the update from here. But when I press update from SD Card I get an error saying 'No Signature' and the installation aborts.

Has anyone successfully been able to do this? or is there a specific procedure I am missing?

How do I root? I was trying it before, but it didnt work for me, Im thinking maybe the source I used to root was not good.

Do you have any suggestions?
