Updating your Apps

Hey, someone mentioned this elsewhere but thought I'd put this up.

Some apps will tell you when you open them that a new update is available, some won't and some don't tell you about the update consistently. I found a way to see if your apps are updated.

Go to Market
Tap My Downloads

This will bring up a list of EVERYTHING you've ever installed from the Android Market. Everything should be listed as either "Installed" or "Free".

If it's listed as "Installed" that means it's on your phone(obviously) but also up to date.

If it's listed as "Free" it's either something you installed, but later uninstalled, -OR- something you installed, but do not have the latest version.

If you know it's something you installed, you can tap it, and install it, it should give you a message saying that it's replacing the old version with this new version and keeping the user data.

Hope this helps...and I hope in the future they have an option to do updates with more automation. I know that means more stuff going on in the background, but some people would be willing to make that leap.

I recommend "OI Update" it checks for updates automatically.

OI Update doesn't pick up most of my apps and also it doesn't always link to the market to download them (even if that's where they initially came from)...

I'll stick to obsessively checking the market like 20 times a day :o

Ah, well then it looks like OI Update isn't ready for prime time anyway. Thanks!

I know this post is almost a week old, but there's a new application out called aTrackDog which does a much better job than OI Update (at least for me). OI Update gave me lots of question marks, but aTrackDog has no problems whatsoever.

I also used track dog and amazingly all my application were not up to date. I just wish you could hit a button and trackdog would just update all of them at the sametime but I am sure that would use lots of resources and take sometime to do.

I like OI update but, the apps have to support the feature, true it seems to route you to the devs mirror if they have one, I dont think its a big deal...

an company that calles itself OI OI OI!, cant be all bad

a really good application that checks for updates for ur other apps is called "aTrackDog" works really well and you have the option of installing from market or website, tells you which ver you have and which ver is the latest.

looks like the updating apps aren't quite ready yet.

To be honest, I'm old school, I don't like solving everything with an app. With memory being where it is right now with the G1, I'd rather use that space for something else.
Besides, since I'm in the Android Market daily, it's no big deal to hit menu, tap "My Downloads" and scroll through looking for apps that need to be updated. A good deal of the devs are smart enough to have that as part of their apps, like Locale lets you know when a new version is available when you open up the program.

The reason I started this thread is because knowing how to do something yourself is always best. Relying on someone else to develop a process or an app, or just give you whatever it is you want/need puts you at their mercy, it puts them in control. Knowing how to do it yourself puts you in control. I know we all can't be doctors and lawyers, some things you do have to rely on other people, it's part of civilization. But I've noticed an increased reluctance of people to learn how to do things themselves, even with the simplest of tasks.
Sure, you may go off and use an app, and never worry, and never need to worry, but it's always good to at least know how to do something yourself, even if you never need to.

my two cents.

be careful when manually updating apps from the 'Downloads' list in your marketplace. I noticed that some apps that I had that were installed showed up as "Free" in the marketplace, but were actually older versions that the one I had installed. Be careful not to accidentally downgrade your apps.

anyone know why my apps wont ever change from installed? i check the market and it shows newer versions of multiple apps but now it doesnt ever update.
