Upgrade 1.5 OS on Rogers phone running on AT&T?

I'm pretty new to the Rogers phones and looking to get one to use on AT&T. Does anyone know how well a Rogers G1 or Magic running on AT&T can be upgraded? I'd like to install Android 1.6 with a soft keyboard and get access to all the google apps. Any advice as to advantages of the Magic over the G1 (keyboard differences aside)?

Seems folks at XDA have been successful. I would search there pretty thoroughly before proceeding and get as much info as you can.
