Upgrade questions..

I didn't really see a thread quite like this, so I made my own.

My upgrade eligibility is supposedly coming on 12/20 of this year, but AT&T uses confusing language. They say I "may" be eligible on that date, so does that mean I might NOT be eligible by then, too? If that's the case, is it even worth attempting to call customer care when it gets close to that date to try for an earlier upgrade date? It seems that a lot of people at least attempt doing that, but I'm not sure how it works if AT&T uses such vague language about eligibility dates to begin with.. Any help is much appreciated!

So I had something similar language and a similar date (12/19). I called AT&T customer service, where the representative confirmed that was when I am fully eligible for an upgrade. About an hour later, however, I received the email summary of my call and it said I was currently eligible for an upgrade. I went to the website to verify and I am, in fact, now eligible for an upgrade.

Long story short, you should call them and ask ;)

@ardyer: Is a follow-up email standard policy? I haven't received one.. If this does happen, would my eligibility apply to other websites that sell phones as new 2-year contract upgrades? I ask because wireless.amazon.com has the Inspire 4g for 29.99 (as opposed to 99.99 directly from AT&T).

If you are currently eligible for an upgrade you can go anywhere: best buy, walmart, amazon, costco etc.

This was the first time I have ever gotten one. In fact, I was a little suprised when the customer service rep asked for my email address.

As far as where you can use your upgrade, I've got no clue. I would assume you could use it anywhere, like 2ManyPHONES stated, but a buddy of mine on Verizon had an upgrade he could only use at Verizon Corporate stores and not anywhere else.

Ah, so it's not gonna happen. Well, thanks for the advice anyway! I wonder how in the world they even decide who they'll do that for..

You should be eligible to upgrade that day. I have read on other forums where some people said their upgrade date changed without notice.

The title of this post "may" be a little missleading as far as the "20 months" goes, but, yep, AT&T customers have been noticing their upgrade dates switching without being notified and were totally unaware of the change until they happen to review their online accounts.

They are moving from a 'number of months per dollar amount of your monthly bill'-type of structure to an all customers get the same number of months till upgrade.

Not sure the formula for which customers are identified and chosen to have their accounts adjusted but I have been checking mine diligently and it still says 11/02/2011.

2ManyPHONES is absolute correct! I bought my last two devices from Dell.com. It was totally hassle free, no issues whatsoever when I called AT&T CSR and had the devices activated.

No "hidden fees' or extra charges...(the only added clause is that if i drop my plan then i would be subject to an "ETF" payable to Dell.com. Probably a safety net to collect 'subsidy-type fees' for selling a device at a discount price.

I get a similar message when I look up my upgrade date. My upgrade date was originally after the standard 20 month period and was set for March 2012. But when the iPhone 4s came out, at&t say that my upgrade date "may" be December 31, 2011 and now when I try to upgrade via att.com, it takes me immediately to a page advertising the iPhone 4s. Anyway, I'll be getting the HTC vivid on December 31st.

With a phone call you could probably get the vivid right now.
