Upgrades?

rellim113

Newbie
So I keep getting calls and mailers from Verizon about upgrading our phones (wife and I have Erises). Is this some kind of "one last hurrah" for chances to upgrade before some new policy kicks in? Our contract officially ends in February 2012, and we had the "new every two" thing kick in for one phone in March and the other was supposed to be in December.

I've tried reading the threads around here about Verizon's new stuff, but there's so much of it that I've confused one thing for another. So I guess the questions are this:

1. Will these upgrades they keep pushing at me require full retail payment on the phone, or will they just extend the contract for two more years?

2. Is there any reason to go ahead and make an upgrade now (if possible) before a given date? If so, why?

Thanks a bunch, everyone...

Welcome to the forums, regarding your questions:

1. They should only require the extension of your contract for another two years. I am eligible for a upgrade at a discounted price (ie: the price for signing up for a new contract), but I would lose the new every two on my line (a bigger deal now that they have gotten rid of one year contracts)

2.There is no reason to rush an upgrade that I know of. I am waiting for a better phone than what is available since it will have to last me awhile (I still foolishly hold out hope for another Droid 1 kind of phone). Wait for the phone you will be happy with. The only thing that would rush me to get a phone is if Verizon were to try and eliminate their unlimited 4g plan and would grandfather me in before that.

I am guessing that Verizon is sending you those things since they want to have you locked into a contract. If they lock you in now they don't have to worry about losing you at the end of your current contract (this is only my opinion).

1. If they are pushing you to upgrade, they're basically saying "We'll let you upgrade your phone and renew you contract early." However, the new every 2 plan has expired, so this will be your last NE2 upgrade. After this, you can't upgrade early and need to wait till month 20 of the contract to get a new phone; and it is only 2-yr contract price, not discounted like NE2 used to be. This is important cause you need to chose a phone wisely, because you'll be stuck with it for 20 months. (Thread viewers, correct me if I'm wrong in any of this)

2. They aren't pushing you to upgrade now because of some sort of deadline. They're doing it so you can buy a new phone, and they can lock you into a new contract. They'll especially advertise the iPhone to you (I got plenty of "early upgrade" texts that said I could upgrade early if I bought an iPhone). The only urgency you have is if you want unlimited 4G, you want to do it sooner rather than later, because soon (no specific date yet) VZW will start using tiered data plans (aka 3GB of 4G for one price, 5GB for another price, etc.)

Ok, that makes sense. I guess we'll hold out for the time being, because:

a) I don't see us switching from Verizon any time soon. They're the only provider that gets reception at our house, at our friends houses, or at my workplace, and our entire family (on both sides) has Verizon.

b) Our data usage is extremely low--my record over the past 15 months is 210mb (looks like I'm going to bust that this month, though, with close to 400mb) and my wife's is around 100mb. I could see that going up if we had faster phones, but not by a whole lot.

c) The wife wants an iphone, and I figure it's probably better to wait until the new ones have been out a bit instead of catching the current generation right at the end of the lifecycle. (I'm going to stick with Android, but I must be able to root it).

Thanks again everyone!

Yep they seem to be pushing upgrades quicker but im waiting for more 4 g phones to come out this summer. I upgraded to the 4g data card and the speed is great so im waiting for a phone that has great battery life, yeah right.

Well Reviews from Droid-Life and Engadget gave the Droid Charge some brownie points for battery life. If you are ok with Samsung's touchwiz UI, then that may be for you. However, since it got delayed on the 28th, it sorta fell off the map ...Lamesauce

My wife and I are Verizon customers and last May we both upgraded our phones and got a new 2 year contract. I got a smartphone (HTC Incredible) but my wife did not. She got an LG Cosmos and is now sorry she did not get a smartphone. At the time, their new every 2 was still in effect so we are eligible for a discount sometime next January.

Last week I got a text message from Verizon saying I could now upgrade my phone for a discount (plus a new 2 year contract). When I checked my account on the website, I found this to be true.

A couple of questions here
