Upgrading phone on existing AT&T account

I have a friend who just purchased a Samsung S5. He has the phone he used previously, which is running ICS. His wife has an older, smaller phone running GB. They have separate contracts with AT&T. He would like for his wife to change phones from her current phone, on her contract, to his old phone, which was on his contract.
How would he/she go about this? He will be doing the actual work, since she is technically limited, to say the least.

Hi koolaid_kid, I moved this thread to the AT&T forum :)

Since they are both AT&T phones all you have to do is swap the SIM card as Crashdamage mentioned, then turn the phone back on and it will work just fine.

Would this also work to upgrade my phone with 2-yr contract extension and not change my data plan? Could I swap my old SIM in new device but keep my current plan? I've read the steps to swap out the SIMs but wasn't sure if it would trigger a new plan.
