Help Upgrading to bigger SD Card?

JoeHPSDA

My SD Card is full and I'd like to get a bigger one.

But I don't want to lose what's on the current card.

Has anyone actually been able to copy the contents of one SD card to another, then put the new card in the phone and have Android recognize it?

I'm not using the Adaptable Storage feature. I'm using the SD card as external storage.

Has anyone ever done it? I plan to move from 64 GB to 128 GB in a Moto G5 running Android 7.0

Thanks.

Not a difficult process.
The way I would do this is to make sure that if you have any app data on the SD card move it back to the internal storage. Connect your phone to a PC with a data cable and backup the card to the PC, using the built in file manager.
Disconnect the phone.
Remove the old card and insert the new card.
Format the new card in your phone.
Reconnect the phone to the PC and then copy the data from your old card to the new card.
Disconnect and you should be good to go.
(Almost takes longer to explain the process than to actually do it.)

Or ...

  1. Turn off the phone
  2. Remove the SD card with data
  3. Plug in SD card (via card reader) to PC
  4. (IMPORTANT) Enable your file browser to display hidden and system files.
  5. Copy all files/folders to an empty folder on the PC.
  6. Remove SD card from reader and insert new larger card.
  7. Copy all files/folders from PC to new SD card
  8. Unmount SD card before removing.
  9. Insert new larger SD card in phone.
  10. Power on phone.
That should be it.
