USA Travel Plan

Hey folks,

Have you taken your Rogers smartphone to the USA before? How easy is it to find free wifi? I'm just wondering if the $30 for 10MB data plan is worth it. I know it's a lot of money but I'm debating if I really need the "smart" features of my phone or if I can live with a dumbphone for a week. It sure would be nice to check email or upload some pictures as I travel...

Most if not all hotels have WIFI hotspot, so if you're staying at one, you can see if they charge you for WIFI. If you're staying at a friend/relative's place, see if they have WIFI. Starbuck has free WIFI, if you don't want to buy anything form there, just stand infront of the place (I think that'll work). The starbucks I go to (around Toronto) don't have their WIFI restricted...I'm assuming it's the same in the US.

From your posts, it seems you have a Nexus One. And I'm assuming you have the AT&T N1 if you're in Canada. What Rogers is charging, $30 for 10MB is robery. You can just go to AT&T and get a SIM (I believe I read it's free if you go to the corporate stores from some users here). Go on AT&T website, put the zip code of the area you're visiting and see what they have to say.

I put a Micigan zip code and this is what I get
Pay As You Go cards are available in these amounts:

Card Denomination
$15
$25
$50

Data is $0.01 per KB. So you can do the math to see if it's cheaper or not. I'm thinking it is WAY cheaper than what Rogers is charging for roaming. Plus this way, you have a phone to make calls too.

I think being an unlock phone is one of the biggest selling point of the Nexus One. :D

Hope that helps :)

Cool, thanks for the tips! I'll dig out my calculator and do some math. I suppose the downside of getting an AT&T SIM is my phone number is down... perhaps I could set up call forwarding from Rogers to AT&T?

I'll see how the numbers look.

Don't know if this work: create another gmail account with a US address, sign up for Google Voice and add that gmail to your Nexus. If it works, free VM forwarding from any phone numbers to your Google number. You might want to look into it.

Ya, that might work for voice if I get a PAYG data plan or something... definitely something else to consider. Thanks!

I does not Cost that much at all.. with rogers you can take your 500MB or 1GB for only $10 extra a month to the USA.

just call rogers and ask about the ONE RATE DATA PLAN for an additional $10/mnth you can roam in the US using your already included data. don't bother getting a US sim card.
