Help usb charging on S5

So...I have an S2. And I bought and returned an S4. I bought and am keeping an S6.

And today I just received an S5 for my wife.

Now the S5 is a little puzzling. All the others use and can use a standard usb charging set up. But the S5 came with a charging cord that has a double "dongle" on the phone end.

Is this the only kind of charging cord that I can use with the S5? The standard micro(?) usb won't work?

The S5 comes with a USB 3 type C connector, but a standard Micro USB cord should still work.

Thank you.

That means I can use the same cord as I used on the S4 and my S6 correct? Just plug it in to the Micro(? haven't tried it) / compatible half?

What is the purpose of the type C connector...what does it bring to the game that the standard Micro does not?

If you use the standard cord, even in a USB 3 port, you will still only get USB 2 speeds. I misspoke when I said it was the type C connector, it's the micro-usb superspeed connector. You can compare them here.

The Type C connector is analogous to Apple's lightning connector in that it is USB 3 compliant and it can be used either direction.

Thanks to all for taking the time.

That's a relief. Hate to have to carry around a special charging cable for this one phone.

And, in my brief experience, compared to charging on my other phones with micro-USB, the USB-3 doesn't seem any faster...maybe even a bit slower.

You will only see a benefit from the USB 3 cable when it is plugged into a USB 3 port, which can deliver up to 900mA as opposed to 500mA standard for USB 2.
