USB configuration will not default to MIDI

I need USB configuration to default to MIDI so that the phone will connect automatically when I plug the USB cable into my car. Galaxy 5, SM-N920V, Android 7.0 O/S. I have followed all suggestions - enabled developer options, select MIDI as USB config, connect to PC, disconnect from PC, etc. NOTHING WORKS. (Not to mention problem with repeated connect/disconnect to the PC). To use my Android Galaxy Note 5 when connected to my Honda Civic 2016 I must always first change the USB config setting on the phone manually to MIDI. It always defaults to MTP. If I'm navigating using the phone on an extended trip, I have to reset every time I stop the car. (I virtually never need to connect my phone to the PC, I charge it from an outlet). (I transfer photos using PhotoTransfer by having desktop PC and phone on the same network). Can anyone please tell me how to get the phone TO STAY ON MIDI SETTING BY DEFAULT????? and BTW what the heck is "Lollipop"? My About Phone says it is running Android 7.0. Not a big fan of cute names for technological features.

There's a 'Select USB Configuration' option that allows you to set the default from MTP to MIDI, but it's buried in your phone's 'Developer Options'. To enable it you need to go into your Settings >> About phone and scroll down to 'Build number', and tap on it seven times. Then go back to your Settings menu and the Developer Options should be there. Open it to find that 'Select USB Configuration' option.

You might also want to enable 'USB debugging' while you're in Developer Options. It can be helpful in other USB matters when you're connecting your phone to a computer.

As I thought I had suggested in my question, i already went through all the steps you describe - developer options ON, I have selected the USB configuration i want many times (MIDI) but every time it reverts to MTP. I have tried this with and without debugging enabled. I have tried it with and without the phone connected to my PC. The only time I ever connect my phone to the PC is when i am trying to fix this problem. I am already doing all this, and still i cannot get the USB config to DEFAULT to MIDI. Do you have any additional settings switched to suggest?
