USB connection

I'm trying to connect my phone (Nexus S) to the PC (Windows 7 x86 and 64 bit) using USB connection. I've followed some guide, and it looks straight forward - connect the phone using a USB cable, install drivers - and that's it. I should see a popup when I plug the phone, but I don't see one.
I've enabled USB debugging on the phone, downloaded the Android SDK (used the extras/google/usb_driver), but still see in the Device manager "Unknown device).
Is there anything I'm missing or configured in the wrong way?

I have an Epic 4G and I can say from experience that the USB connection is VERY sensitive. I tried several cords including the one that came with it before I got one that would allow it to connect correctly. Ended up using the one that came with my old Palm Pre. Go figure. Also, if you are using a desktop try a USB slot on the back of the computer instead of one that is located on the front. This seems to make a difference as well.
