USB Detection problems

Are you using the stock USB cable that came with the tablet? Some aftermarket cables will charge only, not transfer data.
Do you have the proper USB drivers installed on your laptop to be able to connect with the tablet?

I don't have the original USB lead unfortunately, I tried to download the original USB driver but have discovered it has a custom ROM installed !!!!

Try different USB cables.
Custom Rom shouldn't matter. Pretty sure USB drivers are matched to the hardware.

I cannot get my laptops usb to pick up and access my tablet - it charges it, that is all
It's been years since I physically connected an Android device to a computer, but I remember there being a system setting to adjust what USB connections could do.

If you haven't already, please look through your tablet's system settings for anything USB-related. You should see a setting you can change.

You don't say which tablet or android version your running, but here are a few tips:

  1. Always make sure your device is unlock before plugging it in,
  2. Once plugged in you either:
  • A: Swipe down and choose MTP file transfer instead of charge only or
  • B: Wait for a notification to appear on your home screen to share the devices files with the PC.
Hope this helps a little.

Something I forgot to ask you: why do you want to connect via cable? There are other ways to connect that don't involve any physical equipment. Since charging is not your objective, you don't need a cable.

I use Airdroid, which is an excellent app that gives you complete access to your Android device from a computer. You might want to take a look and see if it would work for your objective.
