Help USB Device Not Recognized

I think this is happening since the Lollipop update, but it seems I would have come across the problem earlier. Has there been some other update since Lollipop?

When I plug my Samsung S5 into my PC, I get the popup error message USB Device Not Recognized. I went to Samsung website and downloaded the driver (at least, I think it was the correct driver - I don't know why they make it so difficult) and installed it. I restarted the PC but it's still not connecting to my phone. I've tried it with both the cable that comes with the phone and a regular micro-USB cable with the same results.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with current updates.

Can anybody help me?

I'm sorry I didn't that there was already a thread about this problem. Has a solution been found?
Please note that I did not have this problem before now (I'm not sure whether it's been since the Lollipop update or maybe some Windows 7 update).
