There is this diabolical (and hopefully short-lived) trend of selling USB charging cables. They are not capable of transferring data, just charging. If you have another USB cable available (or if you can borrow/buy a known USB DATA cable), I would swap the cable out to see if the one you're using is a charging cable.
I had this exact thing happen to me. Drove me nuts for days until I replaced the cable with a good data cable and put the charging cable in the bedroom, where it does nothing but charge my phone. Hope this helps.
