Hey Marty,

We're going to need a little more information since this will be different by model and Android version. What type of tablet have you got and what is the version number for your device? (menu>settings>about device)

Android 4.4.2 doesn't have a host mode to recognize external USB devices like flash drives. Unless it is built into the rom by the manufacturer, then you won't see anything happen when you plug in a flash drive.

Anything after 4.2 most likely won't have a "storage" mode for usb connections to a PC. MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is the default, and possible the only option. go to menu>settings>storage and tap on the menu>USB Computer Connections and make sure MTP mode is enabled.
