Use phone without SIM card

I have a perfectly good lg p760 that I would like to use without a SIM card as an Amazon reader.
I got it all up and running and operative with my wifi.
My problem is that when I try to connect to the Play Store to download the app it never connects. I just get a constantly rotating circle.
I have tried putting it on airplane mode to stop looking for a phone signal but with no results.
Can anyone suggest how to solve this? Or is not possible?
Thank you.

Well you shouldn't need to resort to Airplane mode as you still want to keep WiFi enabled, and possibly things like Bluetooth if you're using something like wireless headphones. Just be sure mobile data is disabled in your Settings menu (which should be already without any SIM card).

As for the Play Store app not working, are other apps that rely on online connectivity also a problem? That would indicate something with your WiFi network. If things like the Amazon reader app and web browser are OK though, then it sounds like something is going on with the Play Store app itself. You might just need to clear the app's cache in your Settings >> Apps menu.
Also, when you were re-purposing this phone, if you removed your Google account from Settings >> Accounts add it back. The Play Store app still relies on your Google account credentials.
