Using a verizon Galaxy S5 in the UK

I have recently bought a Galaxy S5 only to find it is registered to Verizon who understand are US providers /carriers. Problem is everything relates to Verizon which stops the phone doing things here in the UK is there a way to completely wipe the phone of all Verizon accountability.? I also can't use it to tether which is a big issue as I use it to run my business, when I try setting it to Mobile Hotspot to tether it comes back with 'Mobile number not found'. I am with EE UK based. Any help please. Thanks Pash :rolleyes:
 
Hi

Verizon use cdma rather than gsm - a different system which is not based on the use of sim cards. If you have a Verizon phone with a sim card slot, the slot is only there because 4g/lte needs a sim card. The phone, I suspect, will never work with 2g, 3g or calls in the UK. :( The hardware is different.

Suggest you post the phones exact model number (menu button-settings-about device) so that we can check properly.

Op can get it unlocked but as you said the op has a sims card slot so its already unlocked they need either a patch and a radio editing software to use the device . but they will need to contact Verizon global to get a unlock code if its one they Dont need to do the next step if its already to use now the op will need to Root to use as a gsm device which they will need a sims card for carrier ee


Just look for yourself the only catch is you need to use it on Verizon such as your doing and trust I Dont think you would want to use the global rates . EE sims card and you can do what you want with this URL

If/Once the phone is unlocked, you should be able be able to get signal on carriers that use the following frequencies:

2G/EDGE/GPRS: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G/HSPA/UMTS: 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G/LTE: 700 MHz Class 13 / 1700 / 2100

Based on those frequencies, it looks like you should be able to get 2G and 3G, but I wouldn't count on LTE.
 
I'm more curious than anything. I thought these VZW phones are SIM unlocked. My S4 is. And I went to Australia last year, and popped in a Telstra SIM, and was good to go.

Why would this not be the case for the OP in the UK?

Hey, I am planning on going to AUS in April. I have a HTC One M7 and my wife has an S4. We both plan on getting the S5 in a few weeks.

Was there anything you had to do stateside before travelling to AUS? Also which service do you recommend in AUS and did you have data as I plan to travel up the coast and would like to use google maps (if they have it there).

Sorry for the delay . . . i didn't see this thread until now.

No, I did not do anything stateside before we left. As far as VZW knew, I wasn't overseas.

We bought Telstra cards. I had good luck with it. The voice worked straight away. And the data took a little bit of messing around with, but I did get it to work.

We were from Cairns to Melbourne and felt we had good coverage :)
