Really tried looking for something similar to my issue through all the forums (and the entirety of the internet) and i cant find anything similar.
My original post on Google help forums got me nowhere. Im hoping i do better here.

Device: Unlocked HTC Magic+
Carrier: Rogers (using Orange.pl SIM card in Poland)
Country / Language: Canada, English. (trouble was in Poland, Europe)
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): was 1.5 at the time, now 2.1

I went to Poland in late summer last year and took my HTC Magic+ with me.
I unlocked my phone because i did not feel like bending over and taking it from my carrier on roaming charges. So when i landed in Warsaw i bought a pay as you go SIM card from Heyah at first. Then i found out Orange had SIMS with data (a whole freakin GIG to be exact for 30 PLN (about $10). Are we listening Rogers?
Anyways, at first when i plugged the SIM in, i got no data at all. A trip back to another Orange store and they found my HTC Magic on their online site. I cant find that site, maybe it was on their internal intranet in the store, i dunno. but im almost positive these were the same settings.
GPRS / EDGE:
- Service Provider: Orange
- APN: wap
- Username: wap
- Password: wap
- Proxy (IP Address): 192.168.006.102
- Port: 9201
the first thing i did was check my browser and lo n behold, Google came up (and it always landed on the google.pl page just to prove it wasn't cached)
Happy as a pig in $#!7 i left the store browsing away, knowing it would take a miracle for me to burn off my 1Gig of data. Then i noticed two things.
1. I was always stuck on Edge/2g... try as i might, i could not get a 3G signal. Then i remembered GPRS isn't 3g. Ok, now ill never burn it off.
2. All of my built in Google services like Gmail/Calendar/Maps/widgets, the HTC sense widgets for the weather, twitter, etc... anything not related to actually using the web browser could not access the data connection, even though i could see as clear as the sun, the big E icon with the 2 arrows should send/receive traffic working as it should. Yet no services worked through the phones apps. I could launch the browser and check my gmail from the browser, but not the native app on the phone.
Returning to Canada i swapped sims back to Rogers and just for fun, forced 2g mode only. I got the big E icon and then proceeded to play with all the widgets and apps, and they worked and updated as normal, just slower.
So my question is why does native apps work on the big E here in Canada, but not in Poland? What went wrong? The APN settings? But why was my browser working? Was it because i was still on Android 1.5? Now that im on 2.1 of Android, did that change anything? Seriously i need an answer to this question because im gonna be going back quite often know and would like to start using Google Navigation there, BUT because Google still doesnt have offline/precached maps available.. i will require and active data connection that works with the native Maps app in the phone. Currently as it stands it does not.
has anyone encountered this issue and fixed it? or am i SOL and forced to buy Navigon from the market?
UPDATE
I just found more settings and am wondering if its because the APN settings were set to WAP and not Internet.
