Using international android phone while visiting USA

i will be visiting various cities in the US from Australia for about 6 weeks. I have a HTC Desire A8183 (Telstra) and would like to get a prepaid 3G sim for internet access and phone / text for the time I am there. Does anyone know of a suitable plan. Difficult to make sense of some carrier web sites

I would go to a Walmart and buy a prepaid phone or SIM card. That would be the cheapest and easiest route (avoid going into the carrier's stores individually).
