Help using nexus 5 with car stereo USB input

My cars factory stereo has a USB input which I used very successfully with my iPhone. I had hoped that my new nexus 5 would be able to do the same thing. Unfortunately plugging the nexus in only resulted in it charging not playing back the audio. Has anyone encountered this and/or found a fix?

Unfortunately this is quite normal. If you check the handbook it'll say it only supports Apple products. My father on law's Honda is like this.
My car had a 3.5mm audio jack.

Nexus devices do not mount as external storage when connected to USB. they mount using MTP. Media Transfer Protocol. This makes them incompatible as mass storage with most things apart from PC's so even if if you USB port is compatible with mass storage like USB memory sticks ( which many are) it still won't work with a Nexus although it probably would be OK with many other Androids that do mount as USB mass storage.
I am on my third Nexus and my solution was simply to stick all my music on a 16GB memory stick and leave it connected to the car. For pod casts I use the aux in.
Probably not the answer you were looking for but mass storage is not really Googles game they want you using the cloud and the price you pay for the value of a nexus is lack of storage and restrictions on how you use it.
