Using Ok Google while Aux cable is in

Trying to use the "Ok Google" feature while driving but my phone (galaxy s7) isn't recognizing the command because my aux cable is plugged in for music use. The only time I can use the Ok Google figure is when the aux cable is unplugged (go figure, right?), but this is an inconvenience to disconnect and reconnect the cable to use this feature. Is there a way I can use Ok Google through my bluetooth earpiece although my aux cable is plugged in?

My first thought is are you using a Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve aux cable which will disable the device microphone?

A Tip-Ring-Sleeve aux cable should allow normal use of the device microphone which will allow "OK Google" to still function, it does on my HTC M9.
