Help Using phone while charging

Android Expert
I have the Verizon HTC One M9. I have overheating issues that I think are effecting the charging. When I plug the phone in using a certified Quick Charger 2, I have problems. While the phone is plugged in, it stops charging and starts up again. I guess it's due to the overheating issue. My question is; Does using the phone while charging cause any damage?
Thanks in advance,

I have same phone & carrier. I use the phone with a Verizon quick charger with no issues. The phone gets slightly warm during initial high current charging but the charging is never interrupted. The charger enters its low current mode after a certain period dictated by some factor (State of charge? Temperature? Time?) Does the phone's s.o.c. Indicator show that the phone is charging at all times when connected to charger but below 100% s.o.c.?

While you can use your phone while charging, certain tasks can cause it to get hot and even overheat. I text and surf a few websites while charging but try to avoid playing games or using battery and ram intensive apps. Heat is your batteries enemy.

To BA100: I am charging my phone while writing this. My phone is at 112°. My s.o.c will loose it's lightening bolt and stop charging while it's plugged in to an HTC quick charger or an Aukey Quick charger. If I don't use my phone while charging, it takes over 90 minutes to charge. It use to take about an hour. How long does it take for your phone to charge when not in use?

To MLSS: thanks for the info. I do play games among other things while charging. You can see my charging times above. How long does it take for your phone to charge when not in use?

Honestly I'm not sure. I don't really pay attention lol

I don't use my phoneuch while at work (I have an iPhone assigned by my board of directors for work).
With my busy life coaching baseball, soccer, and football I don't get much time on my phone away from home.

112* is not especially hot and well within the normal range for the battery while charging.

I don't use Quick Chargers as they are hard on batteries, I just use the slow chargers,
ie, the old 1 amp versions, and all of my phones have internal Qi wireless chargers installed.
Yes, it takes longer to charge, but I don't care. and the battery temps are lower that way.

I leave my phone on the Qi charger pad while I am talking, all the time. no harm done.

To MLSS: Thanks for the honesty

To AZgl1500: I think you're right about not using the quick chargers. I'm going to try it and see what happens. I don't think I'm going to loose any charging time anymore. Thanks for your insight.

To AZgl1500:
I tried using the HTC regular charger while surfing the net and got an error message. It says I couldn't charge my phone because it was using too much power. I should turn off the screen. So much for that. At least I tried. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sounds like a bad cable, or a short in the cable or connector.

My M9 charges fine on a quick charger, no problem, barely gets warm. but on the .5A charger in my Pioneer car stereo with WAZE running, it gets blazing hot, but never fails to work or charge.

I thought of that, but thanks. I've tried lots of different HTC cables, including a brand new one. I've also tried different Aukey cables. I've used regular HTC & Aukey Chargers, QC 2 HTC & Aukey chargers and finally a QC3 Aukey charger. All the Quick Chargers were Qualcomm certified. Even Verizon has got my recertified phone going up to 118°. Using my phone on & off playing games, surfing, emailing and texting, it went from 100% to 15% in 3 hours and 35 minutes and takes close to 1 1/2 hours to Quick charge 2 with screen black being left alone. I think with all the heat, the battery and/or the phone is shot. It's acting wonky also. I can't decide if I should talk to Verizon and try to get some kind of deal on a new HTC 10 or wait untill my contract is up in October. I read an article using a Drop testing machine on a Samsung 7 and an HTC 10. The Samsung died on the first face drop, the HTC took over 28 before it stopped. Side drops were close on both. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My final post about my M9. I finally convinced Verizon Support to let me start a new 2 year contract. That way I got a new HTC 10 for $200 plus tax & activation. One tech knew my phone was bad and wanted me to exchange phones. I liked my M9 except for the heat and I tried to hang on to it. When it finally went bad, it took a bit of work to get a new phone. The new tech said she was positive that the problem was the apps that I had installed. She wanted me to do a factory reset (my third) and reinstall my apps a few at a time to find the offenders. I almost agreed. I'm glad I didn't. Now I have a new HTC 10 with the same apps as before. The phone does get warm if I use it while Quick 3 Charging, but only to 113° (current temp while writing & charging) I was told by HTC that it's perfectly fine to use the phone while charging. In summary, my new phone is great, my HTC One M9 was bad and it wasn't the apps, you can always believe the "experts". Go with your guts.
