Help Using the Keypad while on a voice call - Problems

I have a problem entering numbers on the keypad while on a voice call. You all know how, when on a call, the screen turns off when the phone is next to your face, but turns back on again when you take it away from your face.

Sometimes, you are asked to enter numbers when on a call. Maybe they ask you to key in an account number or something like that. I pull the phone away from my face and the screen turns on. I see the keypad and try to type. However, when my hand approaches the screen, it turns back off. I've tried bringing my hand up from the back and sneaking a finger around to type a number. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't.

Now I know this wasn't a problem with my old phone, and I don't hear anyone else complaining here. Am I missing something, is there a setting adjustment, or do I have a phone with a bug?

Thanks for your help.

Have you got a screen protector/case covering the sensors on top of the phone next to the camera? That might have something to do with it.

Hit the power button during the call to bring up the dial pad.
(make sure in settings> call answer/end call "power button ends call" is not checked)

Thanks. I don't have either of those. I did read in a different thread that how you hold the phone can make a difference. I'm not sure how I was holding it before when I had the problem. However, I just tried holding it with me hand across the back and fingers wrapped on the sides. The problem was mostly gone.

I'll try to be sure that I don't block any ports on the top. That's probably what was happening.

Thanks. I was afraid to hit the power button. On my old phone, that did end the call. Now I won't have to worry about that. In checking the setting, I found another one I could check. It tells the phone not to turn off the screen if your face is looking at it. I'll try having that checked, as well.
