Verizon 4G LTE: for hotspots only?

I spoke with a VZW rep on the phone today becasue I'm thinking of getting an HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon's first LTE smartphone). However, the rep told me that the LTE network is only for hotspots at this point, and couldn't tell me when LTE coverage would be available for smartphones in my araea (NYC). Anyone knowledgeable about it that could shed some light on this?

when is the thunderbolt release date?

i cant see how they can not make 4G available to that phone when it is released... it would totally fail if not!

Currently data only devices such as mifi, fivespot, usb modems are available. The same 4G service will be available for smartphones once they are released, like the TBolt or the Bionic.

As of right now 4G is data-only, the radios will still use cdma for voice/text
