Ok, so here's my situation. I currently have an old LG enV2 on a family plan (where I am not the main account holder). I have a phone upgrade available, but I am waiting for the Motorola Droid Bionic or Samsung Galaxy S2 (Galaxy Function) arrive in Verizon stores to use my upgrade.
As you know, the Verizon unlimited data plan is switching to a tiered data plan on July 7. I don't currently have a data plan because I've been living with a crappy phone for the last few years. I want to be grandfathered in to the unlimited plan, but I'm trying to figure out a way to make this happen and still be able to wait for the released of the new "super-phones".
Here are my current options:
1) Buy a current 3g or 4g capable phone (e.g. Thunderbolt) and hope that the Bionic/Galaxy are released within the next 15 days so that I can make an exchange using Verizon's 15 day return policy. Most likely neither phone will be released unti late-July/early-August and I'll be stuck with a Thunderbolt for awhile.
2) Take my friend's old Droid 2 (he recently upgraded to a Thunderbolt) and activate it with a new data plan on my account. Then, once the Bionic/Galaxy phones are released, use my existing upgrade to buy one of them for the reduced upgrade price.
Obviously I am currently leaning toward Option #2, but I see a few issues here...
Question #1: If I activate a used Droid 2 on my current plan (adding a new data plan), will this use up my existing upgrade?
Question #2: If I activate a used Droid 2, will it allow me to be grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan?
Question #3: What is the cost for activating a phone that I obtained outside of Verizon on my existing plan (other than the activation for the $30/mo. unlimited data plan)? Do I need to pay extra to activate a phone that I got from somebody else?
Please help! Any other suggestions or answers to questions are much appreciated.
