Verizon Prepaid added more data to their plans

Yes, but not really. The postpaid plans then charge $20 a line, prepaid is just straight up not extra nuttin'. So it's actually cheaper. One line prepaid for 3 GB is $45, postpaid is $65. If you are doing a family plan and have a few lines it may not be the way to go but it's really not a bad deal at all.

I should probably study that in better detail.

I have a Family Plan with 4 devices on it.

3 smart phones plus a WiFi 4g router, which actually gives me much faster download speeds than any of my cellphones can do by themselves :confused:

I've been looking into this myself. I currently pay $50.00 for unlimited mins and text and only 1 GB of data. If I go prepaid, I get twice the data for $5.00 less a month.

The thing I'm not sure of though is the network and/or speed. I don't know if prepaid is slower or uses a 'reduced' service area. I am under the impression that AT&T doesn't use it's 'full' network for their Go Phone plan but could be mistaken. I just keep thinking there has to be a catch somewhere!

Yeah I hear you. It seems nuts that Verizon would offer two (or three) times the data. It's like they want people to migrate to prepaid. I am going to look into it and I plan on asking those questions. If the trade off is reduced service then it wouldn't be worth it to me.

I had an AT&T GoPhone for awhile and I had a lot of connectivity issues but those were resolved by changing the phones APN. Once that was sorted it seemed to work fine. Don't know how Verizon operates yet.

I might hit the local store in the next couple of days. If I do I'll update the thread with whatever I learn.

Called VZW and the nice lady told me to just use my phone to up/down the gB/month plan each month as suits my needs.

No reason she explained for me to keep it at 12 gB/month is I only use that much one month a year while out on a motorcycle tour....

You will receive a notice that your DATA plan is almost maxed out....
Had that happen while on tour last year, and when I got the notice, I only had maybe 48 hours to go until my 26th of the month cycle ended.... I just chose to stay off of DATA when I got within 150 mB of the max.

This year, I am going to heed her advice, and when my tours are done, just back it off the the 2 gB plan... save a few bucks in the process.... I have 4 lines, one of which is a 4g WiFi router only "JetPack" they call it.
Interesting enough, the JetPack only costs me $10/month. weird.

Well I finally talked to a Verizon reseller in my town. I'm taking this with a grain of salt because some of it sounds a bit fishy to me. The rep told me that both pre and post paid plans use the same networks and you can tether using either plan. Here's the fishy part. She told me that that changing from one plan to another was difficult and she wasn't sure I could use my sim or keep my number!!! To her credit she did make some calls to a few people attempting to verify the info she was giving me.

In the end she said the best course of action was for me to call customer care and they would handle all aspects of the transfer (paying off my phone, settling my current bill, etc).

I'll continue to update this thread as I move along in the process.

I find it hard to believe Verizon wouldn't be able to keep your number when switching between their pre and post paid plans.

Yeah I asked the rep "so it's easier to port a number to AT&T than it is to change a plan withing Verizon? WTF. That makes no sense whatsoever. That's why I thought it sounded fishy. I think they just can't be bothered. If they don't want people using prepaid why are they offering three times the data for $5.00 less a month? She started off telling me the easiest way was to buy a prepaid phone, activate it, then swap the sim. That may be true but I'm not spending $70.00 to switch plans. I'm going to try customer care and see if I fare any better.

that customer rep you talked to is a Script kiddy, has no clue what is going on, period.

call back and get a different one what can help you, and if you don't like what you hear, request a Supervisor, they can take care of you...

the phone number is yours, forever unless you abandon it.

The people you talk to in stores are sometimes so clueless I wonder how they can keep their jobs. I'm going to call when I'm ready and see what customer care has to say. But if they can do it over the phone, why can't it be done at a store? I might try a Verizon corporate store and see what they have to say.

Well I went to a corporate store as I happened to be near one. It took all of 10 minutes to change over. Of course I had to pay off my device (which I expected) and pay $45.00 for the plan (which I also expected). All he had to do was fiddle with some settings and swap the sim. No drama and I kept my number.

So now I have twice as much data and pay $5.00 less. If I decide to autopay, it will jump to 3GB. Not too shabby. Tethering is still allowed and I don't see any difference in the network yet,

I just got back from Verizon, a friend ported his AT&T GoPhone to Verizon prepaid. Not sure why I had to go with him, but I did. lol. Everything went smoothly, except the part where he couldn't remember his Google password. Ugh. I had to reset it for him. Maybe that's why I had to go. At least I can sign into his account now and muck it all up if I want...
