Verizon raising data limits?

I have the Razr Maxx HD on the 2GB/mo plan, but I have a friend who is on Verizon prepaid 2GB/mo and she got some crazy text saying she'd gone over 3GB usage--when 2 days prior she was an 350MB. She called VZW tech support and the techie told her that it was a mistake--the VZW prepaid plans were having their data limits raised and there was a foulup. The 2GB prepaid plans for 70$ will now be 4GB. Has anyone heard if they are raising the limits of contract plans too? I can't find anything on the web

They would have no incentive to raise the limits on contract plans already in place. They have me on the hook for 2GB shared. Why would they give me more out of the goodness of their heart? Corporations don't have hearts.

Yet another reason why I'm not losing my unlimited data.

For now at least. ;)

There is no way VZW and AT&T are going keep these grandfathered unlimited plans forever. I'd be shocked if they lasted another year...two at the most.

People (in general) are just not going to pay retail $$ for phones to keep unlimited data.

If T Mobile could somehow get their act together someday and make some real noise, who knows, big red and blue might make some adjustments to their tiered plans. But I doubt it!

I gave up my unlimited data reluctantly when I got my DNA as I could not afford a full price phone and my Incredible was nothing but problem after problem by that point. I know quite a few people that still have the grandfathered unlimited data and nearly all of them are going to leave if/when the unlimited goes away. Granted that's a small percentage of the total number of unlimited users but I don't really know anyone besides myself who was or is willing to give it up. Especially those who are on a single line. Single line users get screwed.

I think they will keep them, since it is a locked in chuck of install base of some of their higher paying customers. They probably will not touch it. Verizon and their weak device options alone would cause mass defections of those customers.

Maybe for larger customers or business customer, Rush, but I think as people want/need new phones, they will start to drop unlimited for a tiered. I can't see high volumes of people agreeing to $500, $600 or $700 dollar phones to keep unlimited. I've thought about it myself recently.

I think you are spot on about the device options. To me it has always been a shell game that VZW and AT&T play. Verizon has the network so they are picky (stingy) about handsets...AT&T has the hardware so their network can afford to not be as reliable.

I've definitely been contemplating a move lately after 13 years with big red!

P.S. Long time no talk...hope you're well!! :D

It is going to be hard to let go of my unlimited grandfathered plan. My phone is on it's last legs and will probably limp across the contract finish line. May have to look at leaving Verizon at that point.

I thought VZW had said they were going to eventually eliminate the grandfathered data plans?

Maybe I just figured they would eventually?

I'm in the situation right now. Have unlimited data and debating upgrade and lose unlimited vs paying full price for a phone. I don't need unlimited, but I have a single line and the tiered plan is more expensive. If I could switch and keep a similar price, I'd probably do it. I'd also hate to pay full price if they just cut off unlimited data anyway. For now, my thunderbolt keeps chugging along.

If you get "preowned" phones and renew contract that way, you keep unlimited. That is what I did September of last year with my Spectrum. Sure, it isn't a top of the line phone, but it gets by.

50-100GB/mo I use. Cannot afford a tiered plan at that usage. I am sure they will remove this loophole soon though, if they haven't already

Foe me, it's a combination of that tactic plus using the two feature phone accounts to upgrade and then move them over. We have 4 lines and two are feature phones. We no longer us vzw to upgrade the feature phones. They are dirt cheap on ebay. The two W755 motorolas on those lines now I bought on ebay for $10 each with free shipping.

Most people I know with unlimited data upgrade a feature phone line and then move the phone. Given the number and percentage of people I personally know who do do this (friends, family, and co-workers), I'm pretty sure that a very large chunk of verizon customer base still has their unlimited.

The second vzw terminates this, I will defect. I would do it on principle alone and have before when I defected to sprint. I only came back after vzw started offering too good to pass up deals to come back.

I think VZW will completely get rid of their grandfathered unlimited data plan within the next few years. My wife and I have had VZW for the last 6 years minimum, with unlimited data, but I will be leaving. We don't go over 4 gb/mo, so even the 4 gb plan would work but we would pay the same as our current plan. AT&T, 2 phones, with 4 gb plan is $25 cheaper for us. Worried about losing VZW network though. Heard AT&T is comparable here but wish I could test it for free. And if I'm forced to pay full price for a phone, I'd rather it be GSM so its compatible other places.

Though, I don't think VZW will have a mass exodus. We said this when unlimited data was no longer the norm, when they introduced tiered plans, etc, and it hasn't happened... least to the extent to get any attention.
