Root [Verizon] Root before activation?

I am getting ready to upgrade to an S3. I plan to order online as it seems to be the cheapest option. Is there any reason I can't root and debloat the phone before having it activated?

I suppose you could do that. However, I would wait until you get it activated and working to make sure everything works just in case you need to send it back.

Some folks say to wait a few weeks to make sure everything works, others like me, rooted it within 3 days of purchase :p

Also be careful of what you get rid of as far as bloat. There is a list somewhere on what is safe to remove. I just need to find it :)

The other option is to find a rom that has alot of the bloat already removed.

So, in answer to your question, yes you can root it before activation...it is possible. Would I recommend it? No. But that is just my opinion.:)

I agree with Mike, before you root make sure the device is working fine. I tend to wait atleast the return time frame period, which for verizon I believe is 14 days. After you root before you do anything else back up your rom, i use rom manager for that, this is a safe guard for later, and if you decide to remove bloatware which i strongly disagree then you have a back up. I recommend you freeze any bloatware instead of removing it, it will be removed from your application drawer and not run at all. Some applications work with others and if they are removed will cause issues to your device. You can use titanium back up to freeze, you should be able to do it with the free version but its such a great app that you may want to purchase it, I have and have not regreted it.

Also, if you decide to use a custom ROM (Which is best to get the latest version of Android since VZW takes an eternity to push out updates) mostly all of them remove the bloatware or they let you decide which ones you want to keep/remove.
