Root [Verizon] Rooting verizon S3

Anyone have a verizon S3 they've rooted? Was it easy? What are the benefits?
Just about everyone in this forum has a rooted Verizon S3:)
Was it easy? For me--yes...20 minutes and done. :)
Benefits?
Let me count the ways:p
1. because it can be done
2. Get rid of Bloatware
3. Performance tweaks
4. Root only apps.
5. System (core) access.
6. Nandroid backups---A must have!!
7. Custom recovery.
8. Able to fix glitches easier without a factory reset.
9. Different roms/themes/kernels
10. I can go on
11. The support here on AF :D

I go by the written guide and read it thru about 5 times :p
Then watch the video.
If you don't understand something, then just ask!
You have to understand what the process is so you can be familiar with it:D
Don't be afraid to ask

I just can't bring myself to trying it. So worried I'll mess up my phone. The anyway guys.

The risk is very small, but it does exit. So just read, read, and read before you try. Many have successfully rooted and regularly flash different roms. Your missing out by not rooting your phone. Just my 2 cents.

Ok guys. I have a Verizon unrooted S3 and want to run pure android 4.2. 2 just like my nexus 7 without all the touch wiz bs. What's the best way?

Hey Mike. Forgive e me but I'm having a difficult time understanding. Is there a step by step somewhere to go to 4.2.2? Do I need to root first and then do something good else? I've never done this before.

You have a Verizon device correct?
Verizon's latest update is 4.1.2.

If you want some of the updates that are for other 4.2.2 devices, then you need to find a rom to flash that has those updates baked into them.
A custom rom can only be flashed on a rooted device.:)

So, you need to root first to be able to flash a custom rom. :)
Some custom roms such as Carbon rom is based on 4.2.2.
Or the PacMan rom is based on 4.2.2
Just be sure what rom you choose is for the Verizon model device.
If you flash a rom meant for a different S3 model, you will damage your device:(

My list has some roms for our device--Verizon model. :)
There are more roms available that I have not listed.

So, bottom line I guess, is to root your device, then find a rom with the 4.2.2 goodies baked into them.

Does that clarify at all?

If not, please feel free to ask us more questions...we don't mind at all :D

Thanks Mike. At the end of the day, I just don't get it. I've tried to understand but it might as well be in a different language. I'll just keep stock and move on. Thanks for your help tho.

Well, let me see if this helps. I'll try simplify it:)
The rooting guide will do 3 things.
1. Unlock your bootloader --allows you to install (flash) unsigned (not from Verizon or google) things to your phone..such as custom roms.
2. A custom recovery. You phone already has one, but a custom recovery will allow you to do so much more ...Its like a mini OS on your phone.
3. Install superuser. Simply put, a script of sorts that will allow you to run root-only apps and other stuff.

We are here to help if you should decide to root. Rooting is not for everyone and that's o.k.
It took me a year to finally decide to root my Evo 4G---my first smartphone :p

No worries!
