Verizon S3 keeps dropping 4G LTE and going to 3G

for the last two days, my phone seems to be preferring 3G service despite good LTE signal quality in my area. what happens is i can toggle Airplane mode and then turn that off, and it will get on 4G LTE with three bars for a few minutes, get very good speeds, but, all of a sudden, it will drop data entirely, some apps may give network errors, then about five minutes later, 3G kicks in and stays on 3G. the sad part is that 3G on my phone feels like dialup. speed tests give me about 150-300Kbps download over 3G; it's as if Verizon has always crippled 3G to perform like a dial-up or old ISDN connection. so i cannot use YouTube, Netflix, or do any downloads, and internet browsing in general is extremely laggy, with slow DNS lookups, high pings, and slow webpage loading.

in 3G, it maintains a data connection, albeit slow, but still has 1-3 bars of service (it drifts more in 3G). i tried selecting LTE as my preferred type under settings-->mobile networks-->network mode but it still switches to 3G at random. the only way to get 4G back is to toggle Airplane Mode on and off. sometimes it maintains 4G and most of the time it drops to 3G.

i tried to access the hidden menu with *#*#4636#*#* but it doesn't do anything. it used to but now it doesn't. is there an app or any way to make it stay in 4G data?

I am on the latest firmware, with Android 4.3

Most of those apps are placebo jokes but given the reviews I'll try it. Thanks

it's not really signal related though as I got three bars. It just refuses to stay on 4G LTE and keeps picking 3G, I would really like to stop the fall back to 3G and force the data to only use 4G when available, or not connect
