Root [Verizon] Signal strentgh

My S3 is rooted and using jellybean with cyanogenmod. Showing low signal. When others having higher signal strength right beside me. Any suggestions? Can anything be done with the radio to tweak? Or is it just the phone itself?

I am runnig jellybean. Seem to have some issues. Am I better off putting stock back on? I know nothing on this operating system. I had it flashed to another carrier and the company said they had to do this or root it first. But told me yesterday that they could put it back to stalk. The signal strength seems to be lower then normal. The phone does not light up when pulled away from my face. Ringer was stuck the other day. Just kept ringing until i powered cycle it. Emails not pushing through on real time. I was not really excpecting a whole diffrent operating system. They installed a diffrent rom also CyanogenMod. I know nothing about this stuff. I just know that I can have my freinds phone on verizon right next to me with near full bars. And my Galaxy S3 with 1 bar. Also Verizon. Any input would be great or suggestions.

How are you comparing it? The signal bars or by dBm? I used cm10, the bars were very low for some reason, but the actual dBm strength was normal for me.

You can flash the phone back to stock with Odin and the appropriate tar file and then take it from there, as far as rooting or installing a stable ICS based rom.

i was having issues with all roms i installed ranging from low battery life, camera not working, apps not working, etc

Settings > about phone > status and you'll see signal. The lower the dbms the better. Check it on stock and cm10. And compare the 2. For a more valid test, do it all in one place like outside or in one room.

That's exactly why I want to wait a while for more bugs to get worked out...

Good luck :)

PS: BUT, I am getting 'itchy' to try other ROM's :p

Ok. I am getting 90-101dbm. on cm10. How do I check stock? Verizon is saying that I should be getting 1X for voice and text.

did you clear the cache / dalvik cache and run those percausions? sometimes bits of the previous rom like to hang around and screw with things.

I recommend running stock to get a baseline of the performance of your phone and it's capabilities. This way, if something isn't working correctly or is missing a feature, you'll know it's the custom ROM and how to proceed to remedy issues.

I started w/custom ROM and was having connectivity issues; I didn't know if it was the ROM or the phone or the network. Because of this, I reverted to rooted stock and just put a custom launcher and lock screen for a solid baseline without the stuff I didn't like.

I did not install any of this. Sent it out to have it flashed to a carrier and they said they had to do this to the phone. My phone had never been activated. Brand new. I did do some observing this morning on the way to work. Installed that opensignalmaps last night. Showed signal from about 35%-86% average about 61%. Did check my dbm's in the better signal areas in my about phone/status and the lowest dbm's that I seen was 72dbm 4asu. And my phone was showing maybe 1 bar. Should it be better? But it looked like my dbm's was right there with the signal strength that opensignalmaps was showing. Never below 3 bars on opensignalmaps at any time. But only 1 bar on my actual phone.

seen anywhere from 72dbm 4Asu - 101dbm 1Asu. I know that the lower the dbm's the better the signal correct. An reccomendations or suggestions? My phone is an Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3.

Higher dBm is better but note that these are negative values, so -72 dBm is higher than -101 dBm.

Right now I'm at -92 dBm with 4/5 bars, so your -72 should be pegged at max bars. Signal bars aren't a good representation of signal strength, especially with custom ROMs.

You won't know until you know how stock performs as you have nothing to compare current performance. A cumbersome alternative would be to keep a NANDroid backup of stock and custom and swap when you're having issues.

Ok. What would any of you do? Like I said before. they installed jellybean with CM10 Rooted. Flashed to ST. I have -101dbm at home. Which is about 23% signal. Verizon said that should have 1X here. Is this like Edge or 2G on ATT?

Should I keep the CM10 rom or go back to stock? I was told that they would take it back to stock if I wanted. I did not install any of this. So to be able to compare Stock and CM10 would be hard for me to do. At least I think so. Being able to make calls is a big deal to me.

You received suggestions for this in the other thread you created; was there a reason for creating a new topic and fragmenting the discussion?

Make a backup and put the stock ROM on your phone to see if you still have issues. IIRC, no JB ROM is completely functional.

Is this hard to do?

Not if you made a backup of your original system like you should have done prior to flashing the custom ROM. If you made no backup then you would need to make a backup of current in recovery, use ODIN to return to stock, check signal. Then re root install custom recovery and unlock the boot loader and then restore from the backup you made using that option in recovery.
