Verizon to provide global GSM roaming on certain handsets

This should also mean new top tier devices from this point onward should be global by default.
 
i saw this too. I've been tracking it since Friday. This is great news....especially since i travel out of the country a good bit.
 
you don't have to sign up for global plans. I've done this many times with my BB9650 on VZW. They will allow you to do global plans for however many days you're going to be on travel.

Verizon says the devices are not sim locked. You can always just get a prepaid sim to avoid paying Verizon's fees.

i weighed these options before. The problem is usually when you stick a pre paid sim from an International company or their sim period in You can do voice and text but not data. Also , at least the areas i go to, it's really not that much cheaper in the long run. So in the past i've just used VZW's plans. I never made any voice calls anyways, i used data. But it was good to know that in case of an emergency i could make a call.
 
Yep. The catch is you must activate it, or go through the hassle afterwords in the country you are in. This can be very problematic. Best to activate and then have them verify it is active.

I found our the hard way while in England, stuck at at Heathrow airport while relatives waited for a call. Had to bum a police officer's phone to finally make the call.

We called before leaving to activate global, but it did not happen. Had to set it up the next day through a VZW emergency CS number- on another phone.

Added: That was the one good thing about Tmo, since as long as you had the global plan- land at the airport, turn the phone back on and ready to go. No activation worries.
 
The cost of using Verzion as you data and phone source overseas is a lot more expensive than using a local sim card. I have my old Blackberry Storm that I use that is unlocked. Never had a problem using a local sim and a whole lot cheaper.
 
How do you get local sims? In England, every place I went said the only way is to submit your passport and wait a few days to get approval.

The other option is One Sim, but I find that an unreliable ripoff. I use to use my N900 with it.


BTW, the new VZW global data plan is not too bad. Not too good either...
