Verizon's text limit to non-VZW customers

Verizon has a 160 character text limit when SMS messsages are sent. If the recipient is a VZW customer, multiple text messages are sent, however if the recipient is not a VZW customer then only the first 160 characters are sent-NO MULTIPLE MESSAGES.

How about an app that automatically sends multiple SMS messages if the length is greater than 160 characters?

Google Voice does this.

Hmmm...I have GV, how do I send texts with it?

I also don't wanna lose the threaded structure and I want the texts sent from my cell #, not my GV #. Does GV work like this?

If you have the GV app, you can send texts from there. And while I don't use it (I use Handcent) IIRC, it does thread. It will send from your GV #, though.

Wait, really? Are you sure? I just tried doing that with HC this morning, and I got the message back about Verizon limits non-Verizon customers to 160 characters.

If you have the latest update, you can go to your settings and click an option to automatically split up messages longer than 160 characters.

handcent is the bomb! it splits them up and does customization for everything and its free! Handcent FTW!!

I've tried Handcent a couple of times since getting my Droid, and the first couple of times I didn't like it as much as the stock messaging app. After the update a few days ago I tried it again, and while it was a little better, it still felt slow and laggy. Anybody else have experience with this?

I do however like the ability to split messages or convert them to MMS if they're larger than 160 characters. In fact, that's why I tried it originally.
