Video / Media player - help?

OK - I'm not the biggest techie but I feel I should know better...

I've downloaded a video from an e-mail and saved to my SD Card.
I can view the video on my comp with the phone as a disk drive but unable to figure out how to view directly on the phone.

First: I understand the 'PHOTO' program is the factory default for viewing video. When I open PHOTO all I see are the still pics.

I've also downloaded various video apps: mVideoPlayer, VideoPlayer, Zimly.
None of these can see any video saved to the card.

As mentioned; I can watch the video when the Hero is set as an external disc drive.
File is saved in the Downloads file as a .mpg file (opens fine w/ Windows Media Player).

Second question: is there a way to directly view the the SD Card on the phone the same way you can on the computer as an ext. drive?

They have to be .MP4 (encoded in the H.264 codec) type videos to be played by the phone natively. There are some apps that can play other codecs, but you need a pretty high end phone for them to work properly. And according to profile, you say you have a Hero, which unfortunately is not powerful enough.

I recommend using Handbrake. Download and install that. Then open it. Click Source and then Video file. Find the file you wish to convert. Select the "iPhone & iPod Touch" preset on the right. Under the Picture tab options, make sure "Keep Aspect Ratio" is checked. Make sure to select a destination. Then at the top, click start. A command prompt will show up and show the current progress of the convert. Wait for that to finish, and when it does, go to where the video was saved, and put it on the phone SD card.

There are File Managers for Android. Astro is a good one.
