Video Playback Specs

This may be a noob question but we constantly learn. Here's my question:

When i sideload a video that was originally downloaded using a FlashPlayer(RealPlayer) to my LG Thrive i get a message: "Sorry this video cannot be played." This has happened with other videos also but I noticed that every video experiencing this error was above the 320x480 pixel display spec for my phone. All being 854x480.

So that being said, does the Video(type/size) spec apply to what types of videos will be able to dispay on a particular device?

This is an addition to the above post. I also want to ask is there anyway to change my build.prop file to increase the display ratios?
