Video Specs for Default Player?

robsclone

Newbie
I've been testing various videos and formats on my G1, but am running into odd refresh issues and errors some times,

Does anybody know of any documentation for video specifications on the default G1 media video player? (does that thing have a name?)

Many 3gp and mp4 videos play fine, but there seem to be some issues with file sizes and frame rates. It won't seem to stream if it 's over a certain size, and when downloaded to the sd card there seems to be another file size limitation where it will error and say "can not play video", but half the time it actually is still playing the video.

Any specifications for video would be greatly appreciated! I wrote to HTC, but i'm not holding my breath for a response.

Thanks!

I would very much doubt that file "size" will make any difference to whether a file will stream or not, the software will buffer video and then play when it has enough video.

What does stop files from being played are as follows

incorrect video resolution
incorrect video encoding type
incorrect audio encoding type
incorrect container (i.e trying to play avi, divX, Xvid)

I made a guide for how i do, someone here might find it useful hopefully.

and a post i made else where regarding dvds

I like you wanted my videos in their correct aspect ratio, i find it very off putting when they aren't. Different videos have different resolutions so the resize step has to be done manually to use as much as the G1 screen as possible.

If all the videos you are encoding are the same resolution, then you can do a batch encode with virtualdub.

If your going straight from dvd files you will also need to do an extra step for the audio. You will need an AC3 ACM decompressor so virtualdub can open the audio.

Right click the inf file and select install.

Now when you open the video in virtualdub you will need to select Audio then full processing mode. Then Audio, compression. Select Mpeg layer 3 then pick around 40kb 22,000 and see how you like the sound.

This all sounds like pain in the ass, but once you have done it once its easy. It should be possible to use just virtualdub on its own, but i could not find an MP4 codec that worked!
