Virtual PBX Routing solutions: Google Voice, 3Jam, etc...

I am currently with Sprint (and thus in the US) and don't want to loose my number this weekend when I intend on purchasing a T-Mobile myTouch.

I got a google invite and GV number, however, not being able to port my existing cell number is a major short coming.

I was looking at 3JAM a temporary solute until I can port to Google.

What are folks experience with 3JAM? Are there other services and can or are integrated with Android that can allow me to keep my cell number?

thanks

Are you saying you cannot port your cell phone number over to T-Mobile or to Google Voice? Because there should be no issue with porting it over to T-Mobile, even if your contract isn't up yet.
If you mean porting your cell number to Google Voice, you can actually sign up to GV with your regular cell number now. Google Voice Blog: Google Voice with your existing number
It doesn't port the number over to GV, just uses the no. for their services. However, it's not recommended because of the great GV features you lose. Just find a good GV number and stick with it. Then, you don't have to worry about porting anything in the future because your GV number goes with you to any carrier.
Don't have any experience with 3jam, other than reading a post on boygeniusreport when they first came out. I recall that it was a paid service.
If you're willing to pay, I suggest Skydeck Skydeck | Text Messaging, Cell Phone History, Contact Backup It has a free and paid version, has a lot of the features of GV, but uses your actual cell phone number for all of it. Visual VM, vm transcription, etc. Something cool they do that GV does not is they back up your SMS/Call logs/Contacts, and they do a lookup of all of your call logs and if the number isn't in your contacts they auto lookup the contact info(name address, etc) and place in in your contacts, with sync.
Again, you don't have to port the number. Just goes on top of your number. They also have an Android app. Used it for a while on my old blackberry, before GV came into my life. Haven't looked back.

+1, what he said. Much easier to get a number that is more portable (such as GV) and use it for any numbers you get in the future. However you should also be able to port your cell number to a new provider.

I've been using my own SIP PBX for years and only now have a cell phone. It was simple to forward all calls to my new cell number. I even get the CID of the original caller so the transition to cell was easy and people can keep using my original SIP number. I can also buy new numbers based in other locations so that callers can use a local number yet I get it on my cell that is technically long distance and not pay extra other than for the number itself which is cheap.

I can see you are coming from the other direction but do the painful transition once and be happy from then on. Same for email, I've never used the ISP email account and always used my own domain. 15 years with the same email address no matter who I use for internet.
