Virus on a Samsung Galaxy x2

I sadly caught a virus on my samsung galaxy x2 where my internet was either being slow or redirecting to inappropriate websites. I installed a free avg antivirus mobile software which told me that i had two threats, where it then instructed me to untick usb debugging (i think) and another (i think again,sorry my memory has deserted me) unticking access to unknown locations. After this i went back online and looked at a variety of otherwise safe websites but sadly a number of them still redirected to inappropriate websites. I promptly returned my phone to factory settings. As someone who isn't very tech savvy, although my phone's internet seems fine atm and there has been no redirecting of websites, this has all happened in the last few hours, is it possible that a virus could survive a phone factory reset?

Hi and welcome to the forums!

More than likely, your problem is coming from an app you installed. Things like free wallpapers are notorious for having malware.

The best way to fix your problem would be to do a factory reset then be cautious about which apps you install back on it. For example, any time you're installing an app like a live wallpaper that's asking for access to your network or your contact list, don't install it.

Thanks for the welcome, I've fully registered now.

After my factory reset my internet seems fine without the issues from before, would you say that the factory reset is likely to have done the trick, if the virus was still there it would be displaying the same signs as before? Thanks also for the advice regarding the apps, i've certainly learnt my lesson.
 
I would say that the factory reset would solve 99% of the issues. The 1% would come from if the virus also corrupted your update.zip file.

While I'm not going to say you didn't have a virus, from your description of the problem it sounded more like malware. The two things that AVG found were just settings to make your phone more secure. Time will tell. If it stopped doing it, I'm going to say odds are you're good to go.

Yeah I'm very leery of apps.
 
In that case i'm hoping its the 99% then. Is there any way in checking if the update.zip file has changed? Thanks for the advice quickaudi.

My lack of terminology lets me down here I'm afraid, I said virus but it full well could have been any type of malware. I'm of that opinion as well but yes its important I look out for any suspicious activity. The 99% quoted by quickaudi makes me feel a lot more confident but 1 % still poses a risk, albeit happily a small percentage.
