It is VERY unlikely that you would ever get a virus on Android. It is based on a Linux system that is very secure.
That being said, it's not impossible for you to get malware from bad applications on the Play Store. I personally have used Android phones for going on 5 years and I have never used an anti-virus program. I'm very careful to read what an application is requesting access to before I install it. If, for example, I am installing a free live wallpaper and it's asking for access to the network and to my contacts, that sends up a red flag and I won't install it.
